I was wanting a good VR bowling game for my Quest 3, and I ended up creating VirtuaBowl, a free cross-platform multiplayer 3d bowling game. Check it out now!

So I have put together a handful of VR-supported games since I originally picked up a Meta Quest headset, but I've always wanted to make a bowling one, something that is a little more "physical." So I started working on VirtuaBowl, but since building/testing with VR is kind of a pain, I ended up implementing keyboard/mouse/gamepad controls as well. Since the game ended up being fun at the computer, I decided to go all the way and add touch support too. So what I ended up with was a fully cross-platform bowling experience!

Then I figured bowling is always more fun with friends, so I implemented cross-platform multiplayer as well. VirtuaBowl works with the Ape Apps Friends network, and joining a friends' game is simple. When you launch the game, if your friend has a game open to multiplayer, it will just show up for you on the title screen. And if you use the Ape Apps Launcher, you can launch into a friends' game right from the launcher home tab. Multiplayer games all support real-time voice chat as well, since typing to each other is a bit hard in VR.

All of the games' lanes and graphics were built using Basic Modeler. I have been expanding the Basic Modeler capabilities quite a bit lately, especially in the way of model compile optimization and performance. I am planning a few basic model-heavy games in the not-too-distant future, and so it has been a big focus. Basic Model graphics are somewhat low-poly by today's standards, but my graphics skills are also low-poly, so it works out.

VirtuaBowl is now available for free on Android, iOS, Windows, the Web, and the Ape Apps Launcher. Download it for your platform here:

If you want to play in VR, simply open up the web browser in your Meta Quest or other VR headset and head to:

And if you have suggestions of things you would like to see improved or added, let me know in the Discord. I think VirtuaBowl is a blast, and I kind of want to make a cross-platform multiplayer baseball game next, similar to the one that came with the old Wii Sports game...
