I am in the process of transferring from small/medium scale housing to truly large scale housing (i.e. Subterranean Housing Modules -- and later to arcologies) and I have had to re-arrange all my buildings. My colony looks like a total mess and considering the large scale of the new buildings it will get even more chaotic it seems.

Any good rules-of-thumb to keep things "pretty" without the colony looking like a industrial dystopia?

I am only on a medium map at the moment, but in time I will expand it.

Micro management is the key. You'll have to organize your colony into smaller chunks. It needs to be polycentric with the centers being made of residential buildings, entertainment and health facilities.

That's the rule of thumb, but it's not really self-explanatory.



As you can see in this image, the residential towers, lmc's and pubs are always the center and the builings surrounding provide nearly 1100 jobs, while none of them are more than 20 tiles away from the center - that's what we are trying to achieve.

UGH. I will have to redo a lot of things it seems. Some of my buildings are up to 25 squares away from my subterranean housing modules.

Time to rethink, recuperate resources, and start over.

It really is mildly infuriating. When I realized my colony would not be sustainable if it where to grow the same way it did up to that point I had to clear and rebuild an area of about 120×120.
