My Colony v2.3.0 Released
My Colony has just been updated to v2.3.0 which should be hitting all platforms over the coming days! It's not a (United) Earth-shattering release, but we should go over what's new none the less!
The biggest change in this release comes in how the game is packaged and distributed. On Android, iOS, Desktop, Steam and apepack, the game is now fully packaged with all necessary assets, which means that the game should be fully playable even if the server gets totally nuked (with the exception of online/trade related features). The sole exception is the Windows Store release, which is now simply an Edge-powered PWA. Windows users who prefer a full offline packaged version of the game can download it straight from the Ape Market.
Speaking of the Desktop versions of the game, the app downloads are now fully signed and notarized for Windows and macOS specifically, so you should no longer get any warnings when running the Desktop versions downloaded from the Ape Market.
Another change is specific to the Steam edition of My Colony - my first test of using Steam Achievements! I have currently implemented the Independence achievement for Steam as a test. As soon as somebody unlocks it and I see that it is working properly, I will activate the rest of the My Colony achievements in the Steam dashboard, so if you end up successfully unlocking this achievement in Steam, let me know in the Discord!
Speaking of Discord, this is the final release of My Colony that will include the Ape Chat integration, as I will be killing off the Ape Chat server early next year. I have decided that I will still have in-game peer to peer chat in My Colony, but it will simply go through the GBT relay server, which means that you will only be able to see chats live as they happen, there will be no chat backlog or record kept. I am considering the future of the My Colony franchise, whether I want to focus development on My Colony 2 or but MC2 on ice and go back to full My Colony 1 development.
