I just started playing in my world today, and I'm quite new to the game.

I want to upgrade my microchip factories and suddenly I cannot press 'u' to upgrade anymore. Shouldn't it be there? I've used it before...

It only shows up when you have the resources and or bots needed for the upgrade.
check the reference page if you have everything you need.

I am apparently out of aluminum. I am now paying 30000 money per 1000 aluminum. Is there a good way for me to get aluminum? I don't have the technology for aluminum generators yet.

If you don't have yet aluminium generators, then either buy it (don't do it it's far too much expensive) or either being gifted by someone else

Harvest aluminium, ask your commonwealth leader or federation if you're in one.
Build a zolarg colony (you have aluminium mines there) and gift it yourself.

I dont seem to know how to ask for gifts. How do I do that?

First of all, find someone that wan't to gift you( for exemple me) then, if you have a communication hub (a little antenna, built by the advanced builder bot) send me a msg and i will gift you some

When you tap the send message option on the communication hub, they will ask you a charter. Copy paste this one
